Because we've all been socialized to believe this. It's deeply, deeply embedded in the cultural subconscious that this is the way for men and women to relate to each other. Even 30 or 40 years ago absolutely nobody was saying this wasn't just how it should be. Everyone mostly thought that it was. We need to alter the culture but that has to take place in some sort of holistic way.
