I can see both perspectives, but also think that segregated carriages make sense in the short term, while also working on the other prongs of creating better safety and respectful behavior. It's not so much that women can't take care of themselves, but sometimes they just want a break from the constant onslaught of harassment and abuse that is an everyday part of city life for a lot of women. And sometimes they can't protect themselves - from "innocent" bumps into breasts and bums that would make a scene to call out. Such men count on this aspect to cover up their bad behavior. As a frequent public transportation rider as a young woman, I would have jumped at single sex carriages if I'd had the chance. I'd also like to see more police and more teaching boys and men not to be entitled harassers.
