It's entirely irrelevant. Me and other women experiencing slightly less oppression at the hands of our particular androcentric and abusive patriarchal culture stands alone. My pain, our oppression, is neither increased nor mitigated by what has happened in the past or what is taking place for other people. The 1 in 3 American women who are raped are just as raped and pervasive male refusal to interact with their responsibility for a culture that allows that is just as heartless even if it used to be worse, or it's worse somewhere else in the world. This relativism is illogical and frankly, just absurd. It's a way to deflect.

I don't have the time to educate you about patriarchy. Go read some more Elle Beau for that. She explains it quite clearly and well — although you misunderstand her if you think she says it has nothing to do with men. It’s not synonymous with men, but is very much a system of systemic male advantage and institutionalized oppression of women (among others). If you’ve read even one piece of hers, that ought to already by quite clear to you already.
