I've wondered about that as well.

Within the Catholic Church, Mary seems (at least to me) to be a more central figure than even Jesus himself. I can’t help but wonder if this is a nod to a more ancient time when some goddesses kept themselves out of the influence of men (or male gods) and the sense of authority and self they retained by doing so.
